Dare to be different this Mothers Day when choosing your special gift. A box of chocolates or a bunch of flowers is not very original, and it's probably not what your mother wants. Here are a few gift ideas to kick-start your imagination:
1. Bake a cake - specifically a Simnel cake, which is traditionally associated with the Easter period. In the 17th century female servants would bake this fruit rich cake to take home to their mother's on Mothering Sunday. So why not get your hands mucky and bake a cake for that personal and tasty Mothers Day treat.
2. Family photos - Pick out a nice photo of you and your mother and buy a nice photo frame to put it in. Or if you have a collection of photos from a special event, then put them together in a personalized photo album. If you want to go that extra mile try collecting some family information and photos, then create a family tree of all the mothers in the family.
3. A mothers day experience - treat your mother to a bit of pampering with a massage, beauty treatment or spa day. It's always nice to have someone to go with so consider making it a joint venture. Alternatively take your Mother out for the day. Go somewhere beautiful for a walk and lunch, or if find somewhere that will indulge their hobbies or interests.
4. Jewelry - It doesn't have to be diamonds or even from a shop. There are plenty of craft kits to design and create your own necklaces, earrings and bracelets. Any thoughtfully chosen item of jewelry can be cherished a lot longer than flowers and it's more slimming than chocolates.
5. Loving attention - what mothers want most is a bit of tender loving care. What ever you decide to buy, make or give this Mothers Day make sure it includes a hug, because there is nothing more guaranteed to produce a smile.
